The Youth The official newsletter of Youth Stamp Collectors
Volume 10 JULY
– AUGUST 2008 Issue 7
![]()
Editor’s Note ~ It has been a busy summer for us. We had two large stamp
shows in late May (Washington) and mid-June (Oregon). I completed one new stamp
project this summer, now ready for club meetings and shows. A second project
will take awhile to finish. We still have time before fall to finish other
projects. Be sure to attend stamp club meetings to enjoy these new projects!
What has been keeping us busy is some
home remodeling. We will take a mini vacation in August. With the price of gas,
we have been staying close to home, but there is still plenty to do. We
received many donations from the last few stamp shows which will take time to
process and get the material out to Sorters. We look forward to seeing everyone
in September, hopefully, all well rested!
CLUB
NEWS & ACTIVITIES:
I was cruising e-Bay a couple of months ago looking for a specific item. Lo’ and
behold, someone was selling multiple copies of it. Ah-ha! I thought. Our second
project for stamp club! I’m not going to tell you what the project is; you have
to attend to find out.

SEAPEX is held early November each
year. This show is at the Seattle Center and put on by the Collectors Club of
Seattle. The show committee is asking area stamp clubs to put together a frame
of one-page exhibits. I’d like our club to try this. For September,
each club member needs to bring an 8½” X 11” piece of white paper; some
used and/or mint stamps, souvenir sheets, postal stationary and a cover of your
favorite stamp topic (for example, dinosaurs for Joey, flowers for Nina, etc.).
Arrange the items in a pleasing way on your sheet of paper, then hinge or mount
the stamps on. Use mounts or photo corner mounts for the larger items (postal
stationary, covers, souvenir sheets). You will not be able to squeeze all these
items onto your single page, so choose the best items! (For instance, you
can put a cover in the center of the
page and then arrange stamps around it.) However you arrange your page, try to
keep a balanced look to it.
When 16 club members have their
one-page exhibit completed (one frame full), we can enter them in the SEAPEX
show in November. Shall we get the parents involved? I think I will do one….

For those who enjoy entering stamp
design contests, Texas Philatelic Association is again hosting the TPA Youth
Holiday Stamp Design Contest. Obtain contest rules by contacting Douglas
Moss, TPA 1st Vice President, tpeditor@sbcglobal.net,
305 St. Lukes Drive; Richardson, TX 75080-4830. Good luck!

CLUB
MEETINGS

Exhibit Class – We picked up a couple items for some
of you at spring and summer stamp shows. Be sure to attend September and
October meetings as we would like to have your exhibits ready to show by first weekend
in November at SEAPEX. Bring all exhibit material and write-up to the
meetings.
If you need help with your exhibits
over the summer, call us for an appointment on Saturday or Sunday. We will
gladly help you get them ready to show. It is time to do layout and mounting.
When you attend stamp shows this summer, or shop on-line, look for items
besides stamps related to your topic -- covers, cancellations and meters on
cover, souvenir sheets, booklet covers, postal stationary, etc.
Type your exhibit pages. Remember to
keep your writing short and specific. Leave space for your philatelic items
with your written material just below them. Try to balance the material on each
page to make it attractive to viewers. You need sixteen 8½” X 11” pages to
complete a single frame, which is the goal. After the show, we will work on
judges’ advice and raising your medal level. Once you are satisfied with your
exhibit, then we can start expanding it to multiple pages!
Keith and I have been working a little
on our exhibits over the summer and will have them ready for SEAPEX as well.

by USPS mail and would prefer to receive it by e-mail, just let us know (and

With the current state of our US economy, financial donations have dropped considerably, which has forced us to increase cutbacks in some of our activities. You can help us continue our extensive programs by completing the coupon at the end of this newsletter and mailing it with your check today. We greatly appreciate your past, and future, support!
